Glossary
The terms on a Yarta Report, in a line each.
Plain-language definitions. The full rules and factors are on the method page.
- Avoided emissions
- An estimate of the emissions that recycling avoided elsewhere, calculated from published life-cycle factors. Reported separately from your inventory and never deducted from it. It is not an offset.
- Baseline year
- The financial year your performance is compared against. Each month is compared with the same calendar month of the baseline year.
- Benchmark
- A published figure for your sector, such as the share of commercial waste recovered, printed on your report with its source and period. Never built from customers' data.
- Category 5 (Scope 3)
- Waste generated in operations: the emissions from treating and disposing of the waste your organisation produces.
- Contamination
- The share of material in a recycling or organics bin that does not belong there, measured by a bin audit.
- Diversion
- The share of waste kept out of landfill: waste generated less waste to landfill, divided by waste generated.
- Eco standards
- The published national targets and standards behind each category, such as 80% resource recovery by 2030 and 82% renewable electricity by 2030. "At the eco standards" is the score you would have if every one were met.
- EFTSL
- Equivalent full-time student load: the measure of student numbers used for universities.
- Evidence grade
- A, B or C on every entry. A is a primary document such as a bill or a docket; B is a system extract or reconciled record such as a contractor report; C is an estimate or a figure without a document yet.
- FOGO
- Food organics and garden organics: the kerbside bin that takes food scraps as well as garden waste.
- GJ, kWh, kL
- Gigajoule, kilowatt hour and kilolitre. Gas is measured in GJ, electricity in kWh and water in kL. 1 GJ is about 278 kWh.
- Location-based (Scope 2)
- Electricity emissions calculated with the average emissions factor of the state grid where the electricity is used.
- Method version
- The version of the Yarta Method a report was calculated under. It is printed on every report so a figure can be reproduced later.
- NABERS
- The National Australian Built Environment Rating System. It rates the energy, water and waste performance of buildings such as offices, shopping centres and hospitals.
- NGA factors
- The National Greenhouse Accounts Factors published by the federal government: the emissions factors for fuel, electricity, gas and landfill used in Australian reporting.
- Not reported
- A category with no record for the month, declared by the customer or the analyst. It is left out of the score and never guessed.
- Resource recovery rate
- The share of waste that is recycled, reused or recovered for energy. Landfill diversion is a simpler measure.
- Roadmap
- The suggestions on your report, ranked by what would move the score most, each with an estimated effect and, where it applies, an accredited provider you can book.
- Scope 1
- Direct emissions from fuel and gas your organisation burns.
- Scope 2
- Indirect emissions from the electricity your organisation buys.
- Scope 3
- Other indirect emissions in your value chain. Yarta calculates the categories you report, including upstream fuel and electricity and waste to landfill.
- Yindyamarra Score
- The score out of 100 on every Yarta Report: the mean of the categories you report, each scored by a published rule. Bands: Leading at 80 or more, Strong at 65, Developing at 50, Starting below. Self-declared, not accredited.
