Data-bearing equipment
Your data stays with you
Laptops, desktops, servers, copiers and some medical equipment hold data. We do not take data-bearing drives. Before we come, your team removes the hard drives and SSDs, or wipes them under your own process.
- Remove or wipe. Under your own policy. Many organisations follow the Australian Signals Directorate's media-sanitisation guidance.
- Sign the declaration. A short form when you book, confirming the drives are out or wiped. It is kept with your collection record.
- Loose drives stay with you. Our crews will not load them.

A few things need doing before we arrive
Medical & lab
Decontaminated, with a certificate
Equipment that has been in contact with patients, specimens or chemicals is cleaned and signed off by your team first. X-ray units have extra steps.
Batteries
Taken out and kept apart
Batteries are removed from equipment and travel separately from the metal, because lithium batteries start fires in trucks and shredders. We take the batteries too: vehicle and lead-acid batteries, UPS batteries and solar battery storage.
Refrigerant & oil
Degassed and drained
Refrigerant must be recovered by an ARC-licensed technician before fridges, freezers or air-con are crushed. Oil-filled equipment needs a PCB-free result.
Gas & pressure
Empty, then made safe
Gas bottles, oxy-acetylene and welding cylinders, fire extinguishers, aerosols and nitrous oxide canisters are Specialist items. They must be empty or discharged, and cylinders must be yours: hired cylinders go back to the supplier. Acetylene is by arrangement. Nitrous oxide canisters are pierced on Recycle Group's own machine, the plastic and brass nipple come off, and the steel is recycled.
What we can't take
Not on our truck
These need a specialist. If you are unsure whether something qualifies, send a photo and we will tell you before you book.
- Asbestos, or anything that may contain it, such as old lab benches, fume-cupboard linings and heaters. Check your asbestos register before a strip-out.
- Radioactive material: sealed sources, nuclear-medicine equipment and anything carrying a radiation trefoil that hasn't been cleared.
- Clinical and biological waste, including sharps, specimens and contaminated consumables.
- Chemicals, solvents and oils, and equipment still holding them.
- Hired, full or leaking gas cylinders: hired cylinders belong to the supplier, and anything still holding gas goes to a gas specialist. Empty cylinders you own are fine: see gas and pressure.
- MRI magnets: by arrangement only, after specialist decommissioning.
- General waste: paper, food, packaging and non-metal furniture. That belongs in your normal waste service.
- Explosives and ammunition. No exceptions.
